HOME SAFETY TIPS

By the Chief

Home hazards are a year round battle. Some hazards such as the use of heaters are seasonal. The following list of hazards presents some obvious concerns as well as hazards that are not normally addressed.

  • Smoking in bed – this issue continues to be problem in our society. This hazard will continue to remain on our list until we make it non-existent.
  • Unattended candles – any form of fire presents a hazard. Whether it is a blow torch or a candle that is placed too close to curtains, care needs to be taken to avoid disaster.
  • Extension cords – placing extension cords under carpeting presents a trip hazard. Also, do not overload electrical receptacles.
  • Improper use of microwave ovens – microwave ovens heat products to very high temperatures. Foods and liquids are heated unevenly and need to be stirred.

A very common concern for children are burns from microwave-heated noodles and pasta products. Products like instant noodles, macaroni and cheese and other pasta dishes can cause serious burns to children if not properly served. These foods are inexpensive and easy to prepare which makes them appealing to today’s busy families. Noodles, pasta, sauces and fats contained in these products retain heat and stick to the skin. As a result, spilling the product can be just as dangerous as eating these products when they are too hot.

First aid for burns….

  • Remove hot, wet clothing.
  • Cool the burned area immediately with room temperature tap water.
  • Do not use ice or very cold water.
  • Gently dry the area and cover the burn with a clean dry bandage or clean towel.
  • Do not use butter, first aid ointment or burn cream. These items tend to retain heat and cause more pain.
  • Do not underestimate the seriousness of a burn.
  • Keep the burned victim warm while you transport them to the hospital or wait for emergency services to arrive. Cover with a blanket
